This Community of Practice (CoP) lies at the intersection of Migration x Technology. Building responsible technology, policy and practice in migration systems requires ecosystem-wide collaboration, learning, and innovation alongside people on the move. Academia, policy, practice, design and most importantly, lived experience must act in tandem. We aim to build communities of concern around critical issues in migration tech and data infrastructure. To this end, this group serves to foster communication, knowledge exchange and amplify research.

Members engage in ongoing discussions, share best practices and co-create solutions that address the challenges at the nexus of migration and technology, centering value-sensitive and rights-preserving approaches. Understanding and platforming the myriad lived experiences of displaced people, refugees and those on the move is an indelible part of this work, and we seek insight from these groups, as well as expertises that focalises this.

A dynamic, co-created space to connect, share insights, and build real learnings

Event Readbacks

On 20 September, Aapti Institute and Robert Bosch Stiftung GmbH organised an in-person, closed-door event in New York on the sidelines of UNGA’s Summit of the Future event. The event brought together stakeholders from civil society organisations, academia, private sector and multilateral organisations working at the migration x technology intersection, to uncover the challenges and pathways to build a migrant-oriented, rights-preserving and equitable digital ecosystem.
We set out the discussion by broadly highlighting 3 main objectives:

1. Examining the intersection of digital rights, data rights and migrant rights
2. Building bridges among stakeholders in the migration ecosystem, identifying shared challenges
3. Encouraging community-oriented innovation of technologies in the migration ecosystem

These were anchor points for the discussion, and the detailed readback below cover main highlights.

Resources from the Community

The CoP aims to cultivate a space and resources to learn collectively about how technology and migration intersect. These resources have been compiled with the aid of the community to strengthen networks of collective knowledge.
